What Is Chromic Gut?

Chromic gut is a natural absorbable suture made from purified collagen (typically bovine serosa) that has been treated with chromium salts. The chromium treatment slows the body's absorption of the suture, extending its effective lifespan compared to plain gut.

Chromic gut maintains its tensile strength for approximately 10–21 days, giving the wound adequate time to heal before the suture dissolves. Complete absorption occurs in about 90 days.

Chromic gut is the #1 selling suture type for dental clinics ordering from ProNorth Medical. The 5-0 Chromic Gut with P-3 needle (Ethicon 687G) generated $82,000 in sales over the past 18 months — making it our single highest-volume human suture product.

What Is Plain Gut?

Plain gut is the same base material (natural collagen) but without the chromium salt treatment. This means the body breaks it down faster. Plain gut maintains tensile strength for only 7–10 days, with complete absorption in about 70 days.

Fast absorbing plain gut is a further variation where the suture is heat-treated to accelerate absorption even more — sometimes losing strength in as few as 5–7 days and absorbing completely in 14–42 days. Ethicon 1915G (5-0 Fast Absorbing PC-1) is the most popular fast absorbing suture in Canadian dental clinics.

When to Use Chromic Gut

  • Dental extractions — especially wisdom teeth and surgical extractions where tissue needs 2–3 weeks of support
  • Periodontal surgery — flap procedures, soft tissue grafts
  • General oral surgery
  • Situations where you want absorbable but need more than 7 days of strength

When to Use Plain Gut / Fast Absorbing Gut

  • Procedures in rapidly healing mucosal tissue where sutures only need to hold for a few days
  • Situations where you want the suture to fall out on its own very quickly
  • Pediatric dental procedures where follow-up suture removal is difficult
  • When minimizing patient follow-up visits is a priority

Can They Be Used Interchangeably?

In some cases, yes — but the key difference is how long you need the suture to hold. If the wound needs 2+ weeks of support, choose chromic gut. If the tissue will heal in under a week and you want the suture to disappear quickly, plain gut or fast absorbing gut is the better choice.
