Surgical Blades
ProNorth Medical specializes in surgical knife blades for medical, dental, and veterinary professionals. Since opening our doors in 2011, we have optimized and evolved our selection of surgical blades to meet growing demand and industry changes. Currently, we carry the top brands of surgical blades types in Canada, including trusted brands like:
- Swann-Morton
- Sharpoint
- Surgistar
While medical professionals know the right surgical blade is important, it gets tricky to ensure the correct blades are on order each month. With a variety of shapes and sizes, medical professionals need to balance high quality, cost, and purpose. This is where ProNorth Medical can assist you.
ProNorth Medical surgical blades come in varying shipments, depending on the blade. Whether you need a box of 100 double-edged D12’s or a microblade, we can help.
Choosing the Right Surgical Blade
Surgical blades come as either reusable or single-use, have a spine, slot, or edge, and vary in material and shape.
Blade Numbers
To help medical professionals determine the right blade, each is numbered to reference shape and size. Some popular sizes include:
- #12: #12 & 12D has a hooked tip useful for removing sutures and reaching difficult areas such as in oral surgery.
- #15: With a small, curved blade, #15, #15C, #15C CS are used for small incisions in a variety of procedures, including coronary arteries, lesions and cysts.
ProNorth Medical partners with dental clinics across Canada. We know for many clinics, the #12, #15, and Microblade are favored for their small size and precision incisions. For veterinarians, the #15 is commonly used because of the curved edge, ideal for large incisions in soft tissue. It’s our job to know the blades you need, so you don’t have to spend hours researching when it comes time to order.
Handles
Surgical knife blades and handles often come separately. Handles also vary in size and shape, ensuring a unique grip and ergonomic positioning for each. The number of your blade influences the handle type. Some blades like #5, #6, and #8 have wide bases, while #7 and #9 are narrow. This explains why surgical blades can be so distinct from one another in their entirety.
At ProNorth Medical, we sell round handle scalpel blade holders. These holders are ergonomically designed for comfort while meeting industry standards. Benefits of our round handle blade holder include:
- Durability
- Stainless steel construction to prevent corrosion and wear
- Lightweight
- Ergonomically shaped
- Competitively priced
If you have a favoured handle, we can walk you through the blade selection process to find the best fit. Similarly, if you have a blade and are unsure of the handle you need, we can assist you in finding the blades that work.
Materials
The material of your blade is another choice to make. Most surgical knives are made using surgical-grade steel or carbon steel for durability and easy sterility. These materials are also less likely to induce allergies in patients.
Blade Body
The different components of the surgical blade are the edge, spine, and slot.
- Slot: The slot of the surgical blade is literally a small slot or key which slides into the handle. This positions the blade into the handle correctly, so it remains steady during surgical procedures.
- Edge: The edge of the surgical blade is the blade itself. This is the cutting surface, which can be straight, pointed, curved, or hooked, depending on the blade type.
- Spine: Like the spine of a book, the spine of a surgical blade is the ridge, opposite the sharp edge. Not all blades have a full spine. The #11, for example, has a less pronounced spine as a pointed blade than the #10, with its long-curved blade and straight spine.
The blade body helps you find the right handle for your blade and determine which number of blades you are using.
Specialty Blades
ProNorth Medical offers several common surgical blade options but also supplies specialty blades. Our peristome set modular interchangeable tips PT handle and PT blade, for example, are a specific surgical blade set designed for periodontists. The blades are extremely thin and designed for clinical use in periodontal ligament procedures.
We are constantly updating our specialty blades to include more bespoke surgical tools. As medicine continues to evolve, so do the tools used by medical professionals. As a leader in surgical blade supply here in Canada, ProNorth Medical is constantly monitoring industry standards to ensure we have the best and latest scalpel designs, handles, and accessories for our veterinary, dental, and medical clients.
